What's Going On? Glad you asked. We’ve been without internet connectivity for a bit and the site has suffered for it. Our apologies. It was a triumphant return to Eagle River (32nd year there for me) with a week chock full of kickin’ back, lakeside. For this week it was only my immediate family there with us, so it was nice and low-key. They rent an A-frame cabin and we just parked the camper beside it. It’s very remote up there, with only two radio stations to choose from—country or heavy metal. At one point one of them was reading the local obits. Bonfires were the staple nightly entertainment with a showing of the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) once. We all stayed well fed thanks to Pops. At this point Holly and I are getting tan and fat. Throughout the week we thought about thinking about our travel itinerary, but nothing comes of it.
“Flush twice, it's a long walk to the kitchen”… I admit I have no idea what that means, but it’s a sign that was always posted in the cabin back when I was a kid. Things get kicked up a notch this week as about twenty more friends and family members arrive. The lawn is turned into a virtual parking lot. Gourmet dinners get traded for weenies and marshmallows over the fire as Pops split early to make it to his 50th class reunion. Drinking, stockcar races and card games are our main diversions. The local bartender remembered our usual drinks from last year and Holly almost sees double after only two of ‘em. The lake was not kind to us this year…Uncle Ray gets a previously-submerged 2x4 to the head, the pier collapses and we’re torrentially poured on for over fifteen minutes in an open boat. Yikes! Enough of this place. We leave before any more damage can be suffered.
